Trevor James Hemmings CVO (born June 11, 1935 – died October 11, 2021) was a very successful British businessman. He was known for owning many companies and for his love of horse racing.

Early Life and Business Start

Trevor Hemmings was born in Woolwich, a part of London, England. His father worked in a factory that made things for the military, called a Royal Ordnance factory.

When Trevor was five years old, his family moved to Euxton in Lancashire. This happened during the Second World War, when parts of the factory were moved for safety.

Trevor started his career by working with diesel trains. At the same time, he took night classes to learn about business. He then became an apprentice bricklayer, which means he learned how to build things with bricks. He learned many skills in the building trade.

Trevor made his first big money by building houses. He sold his house-building company in the early 1970s. Later, he started another building company. He sold this second company to a large firm called Barratt Developments.

A Career of Many Interests

Trevor Hemmings owned several different businesses. He was the owner of Preston North End F.C., which is a professional football (soccer) club. He also owned companies like Northern Trust Co. Ltd, Classic Lodges Ltd, and Trust Inns Ltd. These companies were involved in things like property, hotels, and pubs.

Horse Racing Success

Trevor Hemmings was very passionate about horse racing. He owned more than 100 racehorses! He is famous for owning three horses that won the Grand National. This is a very difficult and famous horse race in the United Kingdom.

His winning horses were:

  • Hedgehunter in 2005
  • Ballabriggs in 2011
  • Many Clouds in 2015

Property Projects

In 2005, Trevor Hemmings bought the land where an old holiday camp used to be. This was the Pontin's camp at Plemont Bay in Jersey. He wanted to build new homes there.

However, a group called the National Trust for Jersey did not want houses built on the beautiful bay. They started a long campaign against his plans. In the end, in 2014, the National Trust for Jersey bought the land from Trevor Hemmings. This meant the area could be protected.

Wealth and Challenges

Trevor Hemmings was a very wealthy person. In 2021, a list called the Sunday Times Rich List said he was worth over £1.1 billion. This shows how successful he was in business.

He did face some financial challenges during his career. For example, in 2009, the value of some of his investments went down. But he remained one of the richest people in the country.

Special Recognition

In 2011, Trevor Hemmings received a special honor. He was made a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO). This award was given to him for his important work with a charity called The Princess Royal Trust for Carers. This charity helps people who look after family members or friends who are ill or disabled. It is now called Carers Trust.
