Their version of the song became a number-one hit in the U.S. in 1992. It also earned them a Grammy Award nomination. They performed the song again at the memorial service for Michael Jackson in 2009. Trey Lorenz is also known for his own hit song from 1992, "Someone to Hold".

About Trey Lorenz

Early Career and Meeting Mariah Carey

Trey Lorenz met Mariah Carey in 1990 when he was a student at Fairleigh Dickinson University. At that time, he was singing with an R&B group called Squeak & the Deep. He started his music career by singing backup for Mariah Carey on her first tour in 1990. The next year, he sang background vocals on her album Emotions.

In 1992, Trey Lorenz joined Mariah Carey for her performance on the TV show MTV Unplugged. They sang a cover of the Jackson 5's song "I'll Be There" together. This live performance was released as a single and quickly became a number-one hit in the United States. They sang this song again at Michael Jackson's memorial service in Los Angeles in 2009.

Solo Music and Other Projects

After the success of "I'll Be There," Trey Lorenz was offered a record deal. He released his first album, which was named after himself, Trey Lorenz. His single "Someone to Hold" was co-written and co-produced by Mariah Carey, who also sang backup on it. This song reached number 19 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. However, his album did not sell as well, and he later left his record label.

In 1994, Trey Lorenz helped write the song "If You Go Away" for the group New Kids on the Block. This song was featured on their album Face the Music.

Returning to Background Vocals and New Music

Trey Lorenz went back to singing background vocals for other artists. He worked with groups like TLC, Selena, and Usher. He also sang a duet with Basia called "She Deserves It." He contributed to the 1991 album The Album with No Name by Redhead Kingpin and the F.B.I.

In 1997, he started working with Mariah Carey again on her albums and concert tours. He was a special guest on her 2003 Charmbracelet World Tour. He also recorded songs for movie soundtracks, like "Make You Happy" for the Men in Black movie and "I'm Still Not Over You" for the Money Train movie.

Trey Lorenz released his second album, Mr. Mista, on September 16, 2006. One of the songs on this album, "See You Sometime," was a song he had performed during the Charmbracelet World Tour. He promoted his new album while performing with Mariah Carey on her 2006 The Adventures of Mimi Tour. During this tour, he sang background vocals and performed three songs: "Never Too Much," "A House Is Not a Home," and "Crazy."

In 2010, Trey Lorenz appeared on Jessica Simpson's Christmas TV special. They sang a duet version of "O Holy Night." He continued to tour with Mariah Carey, joining her for The Elusive Chanteuse Show in 2014. He also performed in her 2018 shows, her Caution World Tour, and her special concert series "The Butterfly Returns" (from 2018 to 2020) and "The Celebration Of Mimi" (from 2024 to 2025).

In 2024, Trey Lorenz released a new song called "Magic" and performed it on the TV show GMA. In 2025, he released another song called "Makes Me Wanna Dance!".
