Trial and error facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Trial and error is a simple way to solve problems. It means you try different things over and over again. You keep trying until you find what works, or until you decide to stop. It's not a planned method. You don't use a special theory or a step-by-step plan. You just keep trying!

How We Learn by Trying

This method is often used when you don't know the best way to do something. Think about learning to ride a bike. You might fall a few times, but you keep trying different ways to balance until you get it right. This is a great example of trial and error.

Animals and Trial and Error

A scientist named C. Lloyd Morgan studied how animals learn. He came up with the idea of "trial and error." He believed that animal behavior should be explained in the simplest way possible. If an animal seemed to be thinking deeply, it might just be learning through trial and error.

Morgan had a terrier dog named Tony. Tony learned to open the garden gate. Someone watching might think Tony was very smart and figured it out all at once. But Morgan watched Tony closely. He saw Tony try many different things. Tony slowly got better at opening the gate. This showed that Tony learned by trying, not by suddenly understanding everything.

Cats, Puzzle Boxes, and Learning

Another scientist, Edward Thorndike, studied trial and error in a lab. He put cats into special "puzzle boxes." To get out, the cats had to do something, like pull a string or press a lever. Thorndike watched how long it took each cat to escape.

He noticed that the cats tried many different things at first. But over time, they learned to escape faster. They learned that certain actions led to a good result (getting out and getting food). This idea is called the "law of effect." It means that actions followed by good results are more likely to be repeated. Actions followed by bad results are less likely to be repeated.

Later, another famous scientist, B. F. Skinner, built on Thorndike's ideas. Skinner developed what is known as operant conditioning. This is a way of learning where behavior is changed by its consequences. Both scientists showed how important trial and error is for learning, for both animals and people.
