Trifolium albopurpureum, also known as rancheria clover, is a type of clover plant. It's a special kind of plant that grows naturally along the west coast of North America.
About Rancheria Clover
This plant is found in many places, from British Columbia in Canada, through California and the Sierra Nevada mountains in the United States, all the way down to Baja California in Mexico. You can spot it in different kinds of environments, like chaparral and woodlands, open grasslands, forests, and even high up in mountain areas.
What Does it Look Like?
Rancheria clover is an annual herb, which means it completes its whole life cycle in one year. It can grow either upright or spread out along the ground. Its leaves are made of smaller leaflets, each about 1 to 3 centimeters long. The whole plant is covered in tiny hairs.
The flowers of the rancheria clover grow in a cluster that looks like a spike, usually 0.5 to 2 centimeters wide. Each flower has an outer part called a calyx, which is made of small, pointy leaves called sepals. These sepals are narrow and taper into a sharp, bristle-like tip, and they are covered in long hairs. Inside the calyx are the flower's petals, which are a mix of purple and white colors.
Different Types
Scientists often talk about rancheria clover as having three main varieties. These are like different versions of the same plant, each with slight differences:
- Trifolium albopurpureum var. albopurpureum
- Trifolium albopurpureum var. dichotomum
- Trifolium albopurpureum var. olivaceum
