A Look Back in Time
The tall tower you see today is a part of the original medieval church in Trim. This old church has stood for many centuries.
Important People at St Patrick's
Over the years, several important people worked at St Patrick's. In 1381, Walter de Brugge, a judge from England, became the vicar here. A vicar is like a priest who takes care of a church.
Later, in 1435, Robert Dyke became the vicar. He was a very important government official. He would later become the Lord Treasurer of Ireland. This role meant he managed the country's money.
During the 1440s and 1450s, Philip Norris was also a vicar here. He was known for being very outspoken. He was also the Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin. A Dean is a senior priest in charge of a cathedral.
Becoming a Cathedral
Bishops, who are senior church leaders, have been officially welcomed here since 1536. However, the church was not officially called a "Cathedral" until much later, in 1955.
Special Features of the Cathedral
The clock on the tower is there to remember Dean Butler. He was a historian who wrote about Trim. Inside, the beautiful stained glass in the West window is very special. It was the first stained glass ever designed by the famous artist Edward Burne-Jones.
In 1992, the cathedral had some important repair work done. Its roof was replaced, and the wooden beams in the gallery were made new.
