Discovering Trinidad: A Look at Its History
Trinidad has a long and interesting past, going back hundreds of years.
Who Lived Here First? Early Inhabitants
Before Europeans arrived, the area of Trinidad was home to several groups of native people. These included the Achagua, Guahibo, and Chiricoas Indians. They were known for being brave and strong. These groups often moved around, hunting deer for food.
How Was Trinidad Founded? The Jesuit Missionaries
In the early 1700s, a Jesuit missionary named Juan Rivero traveled through this region. He worked to teach the native people about Christianity. On February 12, 1724, the town of Trinidad was officially started. It was founded by a group of Chiricoas people. Their leader was a chief named Chacuamare. They built the first town near the Meta River, following Rivero's advice.
Moving the Town: A New Location
Later, the town of Trinidad moved to a new spot. It was relocated to the banks of the Pauto River. This new location likely offered better resources or protection.
Heroes of Trinidad: The Llaneros
Trinidad is also famous for its connection to the legendary llaneros. These were brave cowboys from the plains of Colombia. One famous llanero from Trinidad played a key role in history. He helped defeat the royalists in the Battle of Vargas Swamp. This battle was a very important moment in Colombia's fight for independence.
