Trinidad (Spanish pronunciation: [tɾiniˈðað]) is a town and a municipality in Honduras. It is located in the Santa Bárbara area. In 2020, about 21,241 people lived there.
Some people in Trinidad believe their families came from Jewish ancestors called Sephardim. The town also has a street named after Shimon Agur, who was an ambassador from Israel. There is also a sports center called Plaza Jerusalem, which was built with help from Israel. A famous person from Trinidad was General Juan E. Paredes. He worked for the Honduran government as a Commerce Secretary and signed an important agreement with the United States.
People of Trinidad
In 2013, a study showed that about 19,593 people lived in Trinidad. Most of them (about 76%) were Mestizo. This means they have a mix of European and Indigenous family backgrounds. About 22% of the people were White, and smaller groups were Black or Afro-Honduran (about 1%) and Indigenous (about 0.5%).
Arts and Culture
Trinidad is famous for its special event called Feria Paseo Real de las Chimeneas Gigantes. This means "Royal Walk Fair of the Giant Chimneys." It happens every December and started in 2001.
Giant Chimneys Tradition
The giant chimneys are inspired by an old tradition of celebrating a special day in December. During the fair, local artists create huge sculptures. They make these sculptures from newspaper, wire, and paint. Each year, the fair has a different theme. For example, in 2018, the theme was El Circo (The Circus). In 2017, it was Mundo Acuático (Waterworld). In 2016, the theme was Defendiendo a la Madre Naturaleza (Defending Mother Earth). The three-day event ends with the burning of these giant chimneys.
