Trinidad is the main city in Flores, a region in southern Uruguay. It is home to about 21,429 people, based on the 2011 census. Long ago, it was called Santísima Trinidad de los Porongos, or just Porongos. People from Trinidad are known as trinitarios or porongueros. This is because the city is close to the Porongos stream.

Where is Trinidad Located?
Trinidad is in the middle of the Flores department. It sits on a high area called Cuchilla Porongos. The city is between two streams, Sarandí and Porongos. It is also where two main roads, Route 3 and Route 14, meet.
The Sarandí stream flows about 4 kilometers west of the city. The Porongos stream is about 8 kilometers to the east. Both of these streams flow into the Río Yí river.
Trinidad covers an area of 5.5 square kilometers. It is about 134 meters above sea level.
A Look at Trinidad's History
The city was first known as "Porongos." Even today, some people still call its residents 'porongueros'.
General José Gervasio Artigas, a famous leader from Uruguay, founded Porongos on July 18, 1805. Before Uruguay became independent, Porongos was already a village. It later became a town, still called "Villa de Porongos."
On December 30, 1885, the town's name changed to "Villa de la Santísima Trinidad." It also became the capital of the new Flores Department. This name change showed the country's religious past.
In July 1903, the city was officially renamed "Trinidad." It was also given the higher status of a "Ciudad" (city).
How Many People Live Here?
In 2011, Trinidad had a population of 21,429 people. This makes it the biggest city in the Flores department by far.
