Trinity Church is a very old church located in a small cemetery in Holderness, New Hampshire. It sits right by New Hampshire Route 175. This church was built in 1797, making it one of only two buildings from the 1700s in New Hampshire that was built to be a church. The other one is the Union Church in Claremont.

Trinity Church is also special because it's the main building still standing that's connected to Samuel Livermore. He was a very important person in New Hampshire's early history, working as a statesman (someone who helps lead the government) and a judge. Because of its history, the church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. A group that takes care of the cemetery also looks after the church, and it's still used for church services sometimes.

What Does Trinity Church Look Like?

Trinity Church is in a quiet, countryside area in Holderness. It's found on the north side of New Hampshire Route 175, inside the Trinity Cemetery. The church is a simple, one-story building made of wood. It has a roof that comes to a point, called a gabled roof, and its outside walls are covered with wooden boards.

A small entrance room with a sloped roof sticks out from one end of the church. On the opposite end, there's another small section with a sloped roof where the preacher would stand. Unlike many early churches in New Hampshire, Trinity Church was built in a traditional Anglican style. This means the entrance and the pulpit (where the speaker stands) are at the ends of the building, not on the long sides like many other old meeting houses.

The History of Trinity Church

Trinity Church was built in 1797. Most of the money for its construction came from Samuel Livermore. He was a very important early settler in Holderness and a key figure in New Hampshire's government. Livermore lived nearby and is buried in the cemetery next to the church.

The land where the church stands belonged to Livermore's family for many years. In 1854, Arthur Livermore Jr. gave the church and the cemetery land to the Trinity Church Yard Cemetery Association for just one dollar. This association has owned and taken care of the church ever since.

Over time, the number of people attending services at Trinity Church became smaller. Now, it's only used for services every now and then. The nearby Holderness School actually started with a sermon (a church talk) in Trinity Church on September 11, 1879. The church served as the school's chapel until 1884, when a new church was built on the school's campus. Even today, the Holderness School still holds special services at Trinity Church each year.
