A Look Back: The History of Trinity Cathedral
How Trinity Cathedral Began
The first Episcopal church services in Sacramento happened in 1847. They were led by a person named Rev. F. S. Mines. A church called Grace Church was started soon after. Trinity Cathedral itself began as a smaller church called St. Andrew's Mission in 1897. Rev. Alfred George was the missionary who helped start it.
Between 1900 and 1903, St. Andrew's Mission was reorganized. It became known as Trinity Church, and a new building was constructed for it.
Becoming a Pro-Cathedral
In 1910, Trinity Church was given a special title: "pro-cathedral." This means it was a church that served some of the functions of a cathedral, even if it wasn't officially one yet. The Rt. Rev. William Hall Moreland gave it this title. The Very Rev. John R. Atwill became its first dean. A dean is like a leader for a cathedral. Some church members wanted Trinity to stay a regular parish church, but the change went ahead.
Changes Over the Years
Because of money problems, Trinity Church and another church, St. Paul's, joined together in 1934. They became Christ Church Cathedral. During this time, Trinity became the Bishop's Chapel. This meant it was a special chapel used by the bishop.
From 1941 to 1945, during World War II, the building called Cathedral House was used as a home for servicemen. After the war, in 1946, Trinity became a regular parish church again. Then, in 1948, it was once again named a pro-cathedral.
Building the Current Cathedral
Work on the church building you see today started in September 1954. The first stone, called a cornerstone, was placed on May 30, 1955. The new cathedral was officially opened and dedicated on October 23 of the same year.
Later, from 1988 to 1991, a project called the Trinity 2000 Building Program took place. During this time, a large room called the Great Hall was built.
