Trio (pronounced "Try-oh") is a small, unincorporated community located in Williamsburg County, South Carolina, United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Trio is about 9.4 miles (15.1 km) west-northwest of a town called Andrews.
Trio's History
The community of Trio got its name from three brothers. These brothers were William D. Bryan, Walter R. Bryan, and James Bryan. They moved to this area from North Carolina in the late 1800s.
Their goal was to start a business making turpentine. Turpentine is a liquid made from pine trees. They set up their business along the Georgetown and Western Railroad.
In 1883, the Bryan brothers opened a post office. They officially named the community Trio. A small community then grew around this new post office.
The Old Trio Post Office Building
The building that first held the Trio Post Office was made of brick and had two stories. For many years in the 1900s, this building was very important to the local people.
It was used as a country store where people could buy things. It also served as a health clinic, helping people get medical care. Plus, it was a bank called The Bank of Trio.
Today, this old building is not used anymore. It is in rough shape, but it is still a well-known landmark in the community.
Trio Today
The community of Trio has several important places. There is an AME church located on Trio Road. The community also has its own fire station.
You can still see the old Bank of Trio/Trio Post Office building. In addition, there are two convenience stores where people can buy everyday items. Many houses are also part of the Trio community.
