The Tromsø Burial is a special collection of Viking treasures. These items were found near Tromsø, a city in northern Norway. They were discovered in the late 1800s. Since 1900, these Viking objects have been kept at the famous British Museum in London.

How the Tromsø Burial Was Found

This amazing collection of jewellery was found in a woman's grave. It was discovered near Tromsø in the late 1800s. An English adventurer named Arnold Pike found it. He was also known for exploring the island of Spitsbergen.

Arnold Pike dug up several mounds (which are like small hills over graves) on an island called Tussøya. This is where the grave items were found. We don't know all the exact details of how they were found. The British Museum bought all the objects from this woman's grave in 1900.

What Was Found in the Tromsø Burial

The collection includes different pieces of jewellery. These items were made in various parts of Europe.

  • The two brooches (pins used to hold clothes) look like typical Scandinavian designs.
  • The colorful glass beads, called millefiori (meaning "a thousand flowers"), came from the Frankish kingdoms. The Franks were a powerful group in Europe long ago.
  • One oval Viking brooch has a fancy pattern. It shows a strange-looking animal with its legs crossed over its back.
  • Other items include a shiny copper brooch, three rock crystal beads, and a spindle-whorl. A spindle-whorl is a tool used for spinning thread.
  • There is also a necklace made of twenty-two glass beads.
