Welcome to Trousdale Place

Trousdale Place is a very important historical site in Tennessee. It helps us understand what life was like long ago. The house has been standing for over 200 years and has seen many changes. It is a great place to learn about American history and how people lived in the 1800s.

What Does Trousdale Place Look Like?

Trousdale Place is a two-story building made of brick. It was built in a style called Federal architecture. This style was popular in the United States during the early 1800s. The bricks are laid in a special pattern called Flemish-bond brickwork, which makes the walls very strong and attractive.

A Look Back in Time: History of the House

The story of Trousdale Place began a long time ago. It has been home to important people and has played a role in local history.

Early Days with John Bowen

John Bowen built the house around 1813. He was a lawyer and also served in the U.S. House of Representatives. The land where the house stands was originally part of a land grant given to James Trousdale. This was a payment for his service in the Revolutionary War. James Trousdale sold part of this land to help create the town of Gallatin. John Bowen lived in the house until he passed away in 1822.

Governor William Trousdale's Home

In 1836, William Trousdale bought the house. He was the son of James Trousdale, who had originally owned the land. William Trousdale became a very important person in Tennessee. He was elected as the Governor of Tennessee. The house was his main home until he passed away there in 1872. His wife continued to live in the house for about ten more years. After she passed away, their son, Julius Trousdale, inherited the home.

A New Chapter: The United Daughters of the Confederacy

After Julius Trousdale and his only child passed away in 1899, Julius's wife, Annie Berry Trousdale, gave the house to a local group called the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Since then, the house has been known as Trousdale Place. In 1903, a monument honoring soldiers from the Confederacy was placed on the front lawn.

Trousdale Place Today

Trousdale Place was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. This means it is recognized as an important historical site. In the 1970s, the Sumner County Museum started with a small collection inside Trousdale Place. By 1979, the museum grew and built its own building on the grounds of Trousdale Place.
