Troy Cook's Early Football Days
Troy Cook grew up in a town called Carnarvon. He played football for the Warriors FC there. For his last year of school and junior football, he played with St Patricks in Geraldton.
In 1993, Troy was part of the Western Australia Under 18 team. He played alongside future teammates Shaun McManus and Peter Bell. From 1994 to 1996, Troy played 40 games for the Perth Football Club in the WAFL. In 1996, he was almost the winner of a big award called the Sandover Medal.
Playing for the Sydney Swans
At the 1996 AFL Draft, the Swans picked Troy Cook as their 26th choice. Troy spent the next three years with the Swans. He worked hard to improve his football skills under coach Rodney Eade.
During his time in Sydney, Troy became really good at tackling. This was one of his best skills. He also worked with an assistant coach named Damian Drum. Troy would later meet Damian again when he played for Fremantle.
Time with the Fremantle Dockers
Troy moved back to Western Australia in 2000. He quickly showed he was ready to play for Fremantle. He had a strong pre-season and played very well early on. By the end of that year, he had played in all 22 games. He also had the most touches of the ball for his team. Troy was named the best player at the club, becoming the club champion.
Later Years at Fremantle
Troy Cook played in 88 games in a row during his first four seasons at Fremantle. This was a club record for consecutive games at the time. However, he broke his ankle in the last game of 2003. This injury meant he missed Fremantle's first-ever finals match.
After recovering from his broken ankle, Troy started the 2004 season playing in the WAFL. He then played 18 games for Fremantle that year. He missed two games late in the season because of a hamstring injury. Troy was often used in defence during this time. He continued to play hard and was fifth on Fremantle's list for tackles.
On 26 August 2007, Troy Cook announced that the 2007 season would be his last in AFL football. He played his 150th and final match in Round 22, 2007, against Port Adelaide. This game earned him a special 'life member' status with the Fremantle Dockers.
After leaving the AFL, Troy played for the Perth Football Club in the WAFL. He retired in the middle of the 2010 season. Overall, he played a total of 301 games for Sydney, Fremantle, and Perth. He also played two games for Western Australia.
Director of Football at Perth Football Club
On 14 December 2016, it was announced that Troy Cook had a new role. He became the director of football at the Perth Football Club. This happened after the club had some tough years both on and off the field.
