Early Football Days
Troy Cook grew up in a town called Carnarvon. There, he played football for the Warriors FC. For his last year of school, he played for St Patricks in Geraldton.
In 1993, Troy was part of the Western Australia Under 18 team. He played alongside future teammates Shaun McManus and Peter Bell. From 1994 to 1996, Cook played 40 games for the Perth Football Club in the WAFL. In 1996, he was almost the winner of the Sandover Medal.
Playing for the Sydney Swans
In 1996, Troy Cook was chosen by the Swans in the AFL Draft. He was pick number 26. Troy spent three years with the Swans. During this time, he worked hard to improve his skills. His coach was Rodney Eade.
While playing for Sydney, Troy became very good at tackling. This became one of his best skills. He also worked with assistant coach Damian Drum. Troy would later meet Damian again at the Fremantle.
Joining the Fremantle Dockers
Troy Cook returned to Western Australia in 2000. He quickly showed he wanted to be a key player for Fremantle. He had a great pre-season and played very well early on.
By the end of the 2000 season, Troy had played in all 22 games. He led the club in getting the ball. He was also named the club champion, which is a big award.
Later Years at Fremantle
For his first four seasons at Fremantle, Troy played in 88 games in a row. This was a club record at the time. However, he broke his ankle in the last game of 2003. This meant he missed Fremantle's first-ever finals match.
After recovering from his ankle injury, Troy started the 2004 season in the WAFL. He then played 18 games for Fremantle that year. He missed two games late in the season because of a hamstring injury. He often played in defence. Troy was still very tough and good at getting the ball. He was fifth on Fremantle's list for tackles.
On August 26, 2007, Troy Cook said that the 2007 season would be his last in the AFL. He played his 150th and final game in Round 22, 2007. This game was against Port Adelaide. Playing 150 games earned him a life membership with the Fremantle Dockers.
After his AFL career, he played for the Perth Football Club in the WAFL. He stopped playing in the middle of the 2010 season. Overall, he played 301 games for Sydney, Fremantle, and Perth. He also played two games for Western Australia.
