Troy Williams was born on December 30, 1994. He is an American professional basketball player. Before playing professionally, he played college basketball for Indiana University.

High School Basketball Journey

Troy Williams started his high school basketball career at Phoebus High School in Hampton, Virginia. He played there for three seasons. For his final year, he moved to Oak Hill Academy.

During his senior year (2012–13), Troy was a star player. He averaged 16.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game. He also blocked 2.0 shots per game. He achieved nine "double-doubles," which means he had double digits in two different stats (like points and rebounds) in a game. Troy was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for Virginia. He helped Oak Hill Academy achieve an impressive 34–5 record. They also made it to the National High School Invitational tournament.

College Basketball Career

Troy Williams played college basketball for the Indiana University team.

Freshman Year (2013–14)

As a freshman, Troy started in all 32 games for Indiana. He averaged 7.3 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. He shot 50.9 percent from the field. On March 10, 2014, he was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week.

Sophomore Year (2014–15)

In his second year, Troy played in 32 games and started 28 of them. He was named Big Ten Player of the Week in December. He also received honorable mention All-Big Ten honors at the end of the season. Troy led his team in rebounds, averaging 7.4 per game. He was third on the team in scoring with 13.0 points per game. In the NCAA Tournament, he had 11 points and 12 rebounds against Wichita State. This was his sixth double-double of the season.

After his sophomore year, Troy thought about joining the 2015 NBA draft. However, he decided to return to Indiana for his junior year.

Junior Year (2015–16)

In his junior year, Troy earned third-team All-Big Ten honors. He played in 35 games and started 34. He averaged 13.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.

On May 25, 2016, Troy decided to enter the NBA draft. This meant he would not play his final year of college basketball.

Professional Basketball Career

After the 2016 NBA draft, Troy Williams was not chosen by any team. However, he joined the Phoenix Suns for the 2016 NBA Summer League. He played well, averaging 12.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.

Memphis Grizzlies (2016–2017)

On August 8, 2016, Troy signed with the Memphis Grizzlies. He impressed the team during training and earned a spot on the opening-night roster. He played his first game for the Grizzlies on October 29, 2016. On November 26, 2016, he scored 18 points in a game against the Miami Heat. The Grizzlies later waived him on January 30, 2017. During his time with Memphis, Troy also played for the Iowa Energy in the NBA Development League.

Iowa Energy (2017)

After leaving the Grizzlies, Troy joined the Iowa Energy on February 3, 2017. On February 18, 2017, he won the 2017 D-League Dunk Contest, showing off his amazing jumping skills.

Houston Rockets (2017–2018)

On March 10, 2017, Troy signed a 10-day contract with the Houston Rockets. He was sent to play for their minor league team, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. On March 20, 2017, he signed with the Rockets for the rest of the season. On April 2, 2017, he scored a career-high 21 points in a game against the Phoenix Suns.

Troy re-signed with the Rockets on July 25, 2017. He was later waived on February 14, 2018.

New York Knicks (2018)

On February 21, 2018, Troy signed a 10-day contract with the New York Knicks. He then signed a multi-year contract on March 13. However, his season ended early on April 2 when the Knicks announced he had a broken jaw. He was waived by the Knicks on July 16, 2018.

Sacramento Kings (2018–2019)

On July 27, 2018, Troy signed with the New Orleans Pelicans, but was later waived. On October 20, he signed with the Sacramento Kings. He also played for their G League team, the Stockton Kings, as part of a two-way contract.

Playing Overseas (2019–Present)

Troy Williams has also played basketball in other countries.

  • Italy: On December 12, 2019, he signed with Carpegna Prosciutto Basket Pesaro in Italy. He left the team on March 9, 2020, due to the global health situation.
  • Taiwan: On November 21, 2021, Troy signed with the Taoyuan Leopards in Taiwan's T1 League. He re-signed with them on June 27, 2022. In 2024, he joined Taiwan Beer.
  • Philippines: In February 2023, Troy signed with the Blackwater Bossing in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). In his first game on February 9, he scored an amazing 55 points!
  • Venezuela: In 2023, he also played for Gladiadores de Anzoátegui in Venezuela.

Personal Life

Troy Williams was raised by his mother, Patty. His guardian and uncle, Marcellus Spencer "Boo" Williams Jr., also helped raise him. Boo Williams Jr. was also a college basketball player for Saint Joseph's University. He now runs a famous youth basketball program and tournament in Hampton, Virginia.
