Cochon truffier
Trained pig in Gignac, Lot, France

A truffle hog is a special kind of domestic pig trained to find truffles. Truffles are a type of mushroom that grows underground. These clever pigs use their amazing sense of smell to sniff out truffles. They can find them even when they are three feet deep in the soil! Pigs naturally love to dig for food, and the smell of truffles is very similar to a scent that male pigs produce. This makes them great at finding these hidden treasures in forests across Europe and North America.

History of Truffle Hogs

The idea of using pigs to hunt for truffles is very old. Some people say it started way back in the Roman Empire. But the first clear records come from the 15th century. An Italian writer and food expert named Bartolomeo Platina wrote about truffle pigs during the Renaissance. Later, in the 17th century, John Ray also mentioned them.

In the late 1800s, a trained truffle hog was quite valuable. It could cost a lot of money, but a good hunter could earn even more. This was because truffles were, and still are, very expensive foods. Often, these pigs were not just tools; they were also pets of the truffle hunters.

Why Pigs Are Not Used Much Today

In Italy, using pigs for truffle hunting has been against the law since 1985. This rule was made because pigs can sometimes damage the truffle's underground network. This network is called the mycelia, and it's like the roots of the truffle. If it gets damaged, fewer truffles might grow in that area for many years.

Truffle Hounds: Dogs to the Rescue!

Today, dogs are much more commonly used to find truffles. These dogs are called truffle hounds. One big reason dogs are preferred is that pigs love to eat the truffles they find! Dogs, on the other hand, don't naturally like the taste of truffles.

Dogs need special training to find truffles. They must learn to recognize the scent. A well-trained dog, like a Lagotto Romagnolo (an Italian breed famous for finding truffles), can be very expensive. Some can cost as much as $10,000! Because they are so valuable, rival hunters sometimes try to take these valuable dogs.

However, some traditional hunters still prefer pigs. They believe pigs have an even better sense of smell. They also think that a pig's natural love for truffles makes them more dedicated hunters.
