The Truist Center is a very tall building, called a skyscraper, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Until 2020, it was known as the Hearst Tower. This impressive building stands 201 meters (659 feet) high and has 47 floors. It opened on November 14, 2002. Today, it is the third-tallest building in Charlotte.
The building is home to the main offices of Truist Financial. This company bought the building in March 2020. The lower part of the building, called a podium, has 15 floors. On top of this podium sits the main 32-story tower. Inside the podium, there is a large, three-story trading floor. This area is used by Bank of America.
The Truist Center has a special design. Its upper floors are a bit larger than the lower floors. This is different from many buildings.
Inside the building, you can find some cool features. In the lobby on College Street, there are brass railings. These railings were saved from a famous department store in Paris, France. Next to the main entrance, there is a public area called Truist Plaza. This plaza has restaurants, shops, and an art gallery. In front of the plaza, there is a 3-meter (10-foot) tall sculpture. It is made of glass and bronze. The sculpture is called "The Castellan," which means "keeper of the castle." Inside the lobby, there is also a shared workspace called Collaborate214. This space opened in 2014. The Truist Center is located across the street from the Bank of America Corporate Center.
History of the Truist Center
The building was first owned by a company called Cousins Properties Incorporated. Another company, Hearst Communications, also had offices there.
In June 2019, a big announcement was made. Two banks, BB&T and SunTrust Banks, were joining together. They would form a new company called Truist Financial. Truist Financial chose the Hearst Tower as its new main office. Truist planned to use a large part of the building. They also had the chance to buy the building from Cousins Properties.
In August 2019, Hearst Communications announced its plans. They decided to move their offices out of the tower. This made space for Truist Financial to move in.
On December 11, 2019, Truist Financial officially bought the building. They paid $455.5 million for it. They also announced that the tower would be renamed the Truist Center. New signs would be added to the building. The sale was completed on March 31, 2020. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some of the changes were delayed.
In November 2020, helicopters helped lift four large signs to the top of the building. Two sides of the building now say "Truist" in big letters. The other two sides show the Truist logo. These new signs caused some discussion. Some people, including the building's architect, felt the signs changed the building's look too much. There is even an online petition asking Truist to remove the signs.
