The Trump International Hotel and Tower is a very tall building in New York City. It stands at 1 Central Park West on Columbus Circle. This location is between Broadway and Central Park West in Manhattan. The building is about 177.6 meters (583 feet) high.
It has 168 hotel rooms and 156 private homes called condominiums. The Trump Organization manages the building. This organization also owns some parts of the property.

Building History: From Offices to Hotel
The building was first known as the Gulf and Western Building. It was designed by Thomas E. Stanley and finished around 1969 or 1970. It was originally built for offices.
Because it stood alone, the building would sometimes sway a little in strong winds. This was a small issue that buildings built close together did not have.
Converting the Building
In 1994, a businessman named Donald Trump decided to change the building. He planned to turn it into a hotel with some condominium units.
City rules about building use, called zoning laws, meant only about 200 units could be condos. The lower part of the tower, up to the 17th floor, would be used for hotel rooms.
The company that used the office building, Paramount Communications, was set to leave in April 1995. After they left, Trump could start the big changes.
Making the Tower Stronger
Trump planned to add strong support beams, called trusses and columns, throughout the building. This would make the tower very stiff and stable. It would stop the swaying caused by strong winds.
The renovation was expected to take two years and cost about $230 million. Work began in June 1995. In April 1996, Trump announced he would live in the building's top apartment. He also changed the building's address from 7 Columbus Circle to 1 Central Park West. He said this new address was "the most important new address in the world."
New Look and Features
Between 1995 and 1997, the building was completely rebuilt. Only its steel skeleton was left. The new look was designed by Philip Johnson and Costas Kondylis.
Even though the building has 44 floors, Trump sometimes called it 52 stories. He explained that new apartment buildings often have lower ceilings than old office buildings. He said the 583-foot building was about as tall as a 60-floor building.
A large, silver globe of the Earth was placed in front of the building during its renovation. It is 30 feet wide.
Recent Events
The outside of the building was used in the 2011 movie Tower Heist. It's a comedy crime film.
Since Donald Trump became U.S. president, the hotel has sometimes been a place for protests against his government.
In June 2019, some people who owned condos in the building asked for its name to be changed. They felt the Trump name was making their property less valuable.
Who Owns and Manages the Building?
The hotel rooms on the lower 17 floors (168 units) are owned by the G.E. Pension Trust and Galbreath & Company. The 156 condos on floors 18 to 44 are private homes.
The Trump Organization owns one of the condos. It also owns the parking garage, the restaurant space, the kitchens for room service, and the bathrooms in the lobby. The Trump Organization manages both the building and the hotel.
The building's board of directors helps make decisions. It includes six residential owners, two hotel owners, and the president of the Trump Organization.
