Tsuyoshi Kitazawa (北澤 豪, Kitazawa Tsuyoshi, born 10 August 1968) is a famous Japanese former football player. He was a talented midfielder who played for the Japan national team. After his playing career, he became a well-known football commentator on television.

Playing for Clubs

Early Days and Honda FC

When Tsuyoshi Kitazawa was in junior high, he played for the Yomiuri Junior Youth team. However, he was not chosen to move up to the club's Youth team. So, he decided to attend Shutoku High School and played for their school football club instead.

After finishing high school in 1987, he joined Honda. This team was part of the Japan Soccer League. Kitazawa quickly showed his skills. In the 1990–91 season, he became the top scorer in the league.

Success with Tokyo Verdy

In 1991, Kitazawa moved to Yomiuri. This club later changed its name to Verdy Kawasaki, and is now known as Tokyo Verdy.

Kitazawa joined a fantastic team. He played alongside other great players like Kazuyoshi Miura, Ruy Ramos, and Bismarck. Together, they created a "golden era" for Verdy in the early 1990s.

During this time, Verdy won many important championships:

  • The J1 League championship in 1993 and 1994.
  • The J.League Cup three times in a row: 1992, 1993, and 1994.

Tsuyoshi Kitazawa played for Verdy until 2002. He finished his amazing playing career as a loyal Verdy player.

Playing for Japan

National Team Debut and Asian Cup Win

Tsuyoshi Kitazawa played for the Japan national team from 1991 to 1999. He played in 58 international matches and scored 3 goals.

His first game for Japan was on June 2, 1991. It was a friendly match against Thailand. This game took place in Yamagata Park Stadium.

Kitazawa was a key member of the Japan team that won the 1992 AFC Asian Cup in 1992. He scored his first goal for Japan in this tournament. It was on November 6, 1992, in the semifinal match against China.

World Cup Qualifiers

Kitazawa also played for Japan during their efforts to qualify for the 1994 FIFA World Cup. He was part of the final qualification stage held in Qatar. He played in two important games during this stage.

Japan's dream of qualifying for the 1994 World Cup ended in a very sad way. In their last qualification match, Iraq scored a goal in injury time. This moment is still remembered by Japanese fans as the "Agony of Doha."

Later, Kitazawa was considered for the 1998 FIFA World Cup team. However, the national coach decided not to include him in the final squad.
