Tsuyoshi Kitazawa (北澤 豪, Kitazawa Tsuyoshi, born 10 August 1968) is a famous former Japanese football player. He used to play for the Japanese national team. Today, you can often see him on TV as a football commentator, sharing his knowledge about the game.

Club Career Highlights

When Tsuyoshi Kitazawa was in junior high, he played for the Yomiuri Junior Youth team. However, he wasn't chosen to move up to the club's main youth team. So, he went to Shutoku High School and played football there.

After high school, in 1987, he joined a team called Honda in the Japan Soccer League. He was a fantastic player, even becoming the top scorer in the 1990–91 season!

In 1991, Kitazawa moved to Yomiuri, which later became Verdy Kawasaki and is now known as Tokyo Verdy. This was a very special time for the team. With other great players like Kazuyoshi Miura and Ruy Ramos, they created a "golden era" for Verdy.

During this time, Verdy won many important championships:

Tsuyoshi Kitazawa played for Verdy until 2002, when he finished his amazing playing career with the club.

Playing for Japan's National Team

Tsuyoshi Kitazawa also played for the Japanese national team from 1991 to 1999. He played in 58 games and scored 3 goals for his country.

His first game for Japan was on June 2, 1991, against Thailand. He was part of the Japanese team that won the 1992 AFC Asian Cup in 1992. This was a huge win for Japan! He scored his first goal for the national team in the semifinal against China in that tournament.

Kitazawa also tried to help Japan qualify for the 1994 FIFA World Cup. He played in some important qualification games. Sadly, Japan didn't make it to the World Cup that year. In a very famous game, an opponent scored a goal at the very last minute, which stopped Japan from qualifying. This moment is still remembered by Japanese fans as the "Agony of Doha."

Later, Kitazawa was considered for the 1998 FIFA World Cup team. However, the coach decided not to include him in the final squad.
