Tucker’s Settlement was once a small village in Perry County, Missouri, in the United States. Today, it is an abandoned village, meaning no one lives there anymore. It was located in an area called Saline Township.
What Was Tucker's Settlement?
Long ago, there were actually two places called Tucker's Settlement in Perry County. One was known as "Long Tucker's Settlement." It was found along a stream called Saline Creek. The other was "Short Tucker's Settlement." This second settlement was further south. It is now where the city of Perryville stands.
Two Tucker Families
Both settlements were started by different families named Tucker. They arrived in what is now Perry County, Missouri, around the late 1700s.
One family, led by Joseph Tucker and his nine sons, settled along Saline Creek. They were known as the "Long Tuckers." This was because they were quite tall! This family was Catholic. The other Tucker family was shorter. They settled to the south and were called the "Short Tuckers."
Life in the Settlement
The "Long Tucker" settlement eventually became known simply as "Tucker's Settlement." In 1809, about 60 people lived there. They built their homes and lived their lives in this small community.
Today, there is nothing left of Tucker's Settlement itself. All the buildings are gone. The only thing that remains is Keith Cemetery. Many of the people who lived in Tucker's Settlement were buried there. It is a quiet reminder of the village that once was.
