The Tudor Merchant's House is a really old and interesting building in Tenby, Pembrokeshire, Wales. It was built way back in the late 1400s, during the time of the Tudors. Imagine a busy merchant living and working right here! Today, it's a special museum where you can step back in time and see what life was like over 500 years ago.
Discovering the Tudor Merchant's House
This historic house is found in Tenby, a beautiful coastal town in south west Wales. It was built from strong stone in the late 15th century. Back then, Tenby was a very busy port. Ships would come and go, bringing and taking goods. The person who lived in this house would have been a merchant. They bought and sold all sorts of things that passed through the town's harbour.
A Glimpse into 15th-Century Life
The Tudor Merchant's House has three floors, each with a special purpose:
- The ground floor was the merchant's shop. This is where they did business and sold their goods.
- The first floor was the family's living area. This is where they would eat, relax, and spend time together.
- The top floor was for sleeping. This is where the family would rest after a long day.
To get to the first floor, people used an outside staircase. The house also had toilet facilities in a tower on the side. Strong oak beams supported the ceilings, showing how well the house was built.
From Home to Historic Museum
The Tudor Merchant's House is the oldest house still standing in Tenby. Because it's so important, it was given a special status called Grade I on March 19, 1951. This means it's a building of "exceptional interest."
In 1938, the Tenby Corporation gave the building to the National Trust. The National Trust is a charity that looks after historic places and natural spaces. They carefully repaired the house to make sure it would last for many more years.
Today, the house is a fantastic historic house museum. When you visit, you'll see it furnished and decorated just like it would have been in the year 1500. It has a mix of original items from that time and carefully made copies. It's like stepping into a time machine!
