Tugay Kerimoğlu, often called just Tugay in England, is a famous Turkish former footballer. He played as a midfielder, a player who helps both attack and defense. Tugay is best known for playing with Galatasaray in Turkey, and later with Rangers in Scotland and Blackburn Rovers in England.
After he stopped playing, Tugay worked as a coach. He was a coordinator for the youth academy at Galatasaray. He also worked with Mark Hughes at Manchester City for a short time. Later, he was an assistant coach for Roberto Mancini at Galatasaray during the 2013–14 football season.

Tugay's Football Journey
Tugay was born in Trabzon, Turkey, on August 24, 1970. He grew up in Istanbul. His father, Özkan, was also a semi-professional footballer. Tugay started playing football in the youth team of Trabzonspor.
Playing for Galatasaray
Tugay played for Galatasaray from 1987 to 2000. This was a very successful time for him. He helped Galatasaray win the Turkish League six times. He also won the Turkish Cup four times with the team.
In the 1992–93 season, Tugay became the captain of Galatasaray. He was the youngest captain in the club's history, which was a big honor.
Moving to Rangers and Blackburn Rovers
In January 2000, Tugay moved to Scotland to play for Rangers. He then joined Blackburn Rovers for the 2001–02 season. His former coach at Galatasaray, Graeme Souness, brought him to Blackburn for about £1.3 million.
Tugay's first game for Blackburn was as a substitute against Sunderland. He scored his first goal for them on October 14, 2001. It was a great goal from outside the penalty box against West Ham United. Tugay quickly became a favorite among Blackburn fans. He was a very important player for the team. He missed Blackburn's League Cup final win in 2002 because he was suspended. In the 2003–04 season, Tugay was named Blackburn's Player of the Year.
Tugay scored his last goal in his career against Portsmouth on November 30, 2008. He retired from football on May 24, 2009, when he was 38 years old. His very last game was at home against West Bromwich Albion. Over 28,000 fans cheered for Tugay when he was substituted in the 85th minute.
Playing for His Country: Turkey
Tugay played for the Turkish national team many times. He played in major tournaments like Euro 1996 and Euro 2000. In Euro 2000, Turkey reached the quarter-finals.
He also played in the 2002 FIFA World Cup. This was a huge success for Turkey, as they finished in third place! Tugay decided to retire from international football in 2003. He wanted to focus more on playing for Blackburn Rovers. His very last game for Turkey was a friendly match against Brazil on June 5, 2007. He wore the number 94 jersey to celebrate his 94 games for his country.
Tugay's Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Tugay started coaching. On June 3, 2009, he began working with his former manager Mark Hughes at the Manchester City academy.
In February 2010, he became the coordinator for the Galatasaray youth academy. On October 21, 2010, Galatasaray announced that Tugay would be an assistant coach for the main team, working with Gheorghe Hagi. When Hagi was let go in March 2011, Tugay chose not to become the head coach. He felt it wasn't right to take the job immediately after Hagi left.
On October 4, 2013, Tugay became an assistant coach for Galatasaray again, this time with Roberto Mancini. However, when Mancini left at the end of the 2013–14 season, Tugay also left his coaching role.
In November 2015, Tugay became the head coach for Şanlıurfaspor, a team in the Turkish second division. He left the club in April 2016.
Tugay's Life Outside Football
Tugay is a private person and doesn't often talk to the media. Even though he speaks English well and has a good sense of humor, he rarely gives interviews.
He was married to Etkin, who was a basketball player for Galatasaray and the Turkish national team. They have two children, named Berke and Melissa. When he was younger, Tugay was also a very good motor racer. He even competed at the Formula 3 level. Tugay is a Muslim, and he believes his faith is a personal matter.
