What the Station Looks Like

The Tumut railway station was finished in 1903. It's a special kind of timber (wooden) building, known as a "pioneer station." This means it was built when railways were first expanding into new areas.

Right next to the station building is the station master's house. The station master was the person in charge of the railway station. This house was also built in 1903. There was also a lamp room and a toilet building, both with cool, curved roofs made of corrugated iron.

There was also a goods shed. This shed was about 11 metres (36 feet) long and 5 metres (16 feet) wide. It had an awning and was also made with corrugated iron. This is where goods and packages were stored before being loaded onto trains.

Why Tumut Station is Special

Tumut station is a great example of an early "pioneer station." Even though some parts of the old railway yard are gone, the main station building is still in good shape. It's one of the few pioneer buildings like it that still exists in New South Wales.

The station master's house is also very well-preserved. It's one of the best examples of this type of railway home. All the buildings at the site are in excellent condition. They show us what a complete pioneer station looked like a long time ago.

The Tumut railway station is very important to the town of Tumut. Building the railway line to Tumut was a big achievement for the area. The station played a key role in the town's history and growth.
