About the Tundra Times
The Tundra Times was a newspaper created by and for the Alaska Natives. It was published twice a month in Fairbanks. The very first issue came out on October 1, 1962.
Why the Newspaper Started
The newspaper's main goal was to help Alaska Natives. It aimed to be a way for them to share their stories and work towards fair solutions for their big challenges. It also helped them stay informed about important topics for all Native people in Alaska.
Who Was Howard Rock?
The first editor of the Tundra Times was Uyaġak Howard Rock. He was an Inupiaq man from Point Hope, Alaska. Howard Rock was born in 1911 and passed away in 1976. He was very dedicated to the newspaper. He even convinced a reporter from Fairbanks named Tom Snap to help him with the first issue.
The End of the Tundra Times
The Tundra Times stopped being published in 1997. However, all the photos from the newspaper were saved. They are now kept by the Tuzzy Consortium Library and you can even see them online!
