Turid Birkeland (born 5 November 1962 – died 24 December 2015) was an important person in Norwegian culture and politics. She was a member of the Labour Party. Turid served as the Minister of Culture for Norway from 1996 to 1997. She also wrote books and worked a lot in television. For example, she was in charge of cultural shows at NRK. She also helped lead music festivals and concert groups.

Her Early Life and School Days
Turid Birkeland was born in a town called Haugesund in Norway. Her dad, Einar Sigurd Birkeland, worked for trade unions. These are groups that help workers. Her mom, Tora Birkeland, was a consultant.
Turid went to Bjerke Upper Secondary School in Oslo. She finished school there in 1981. After that, she went to college for a couple of years.
Becoming a Young Leader
Turid was very active in politics from a young age. She led the youth group of her political party, the Workers' Youth League. She led the group in Oslo from 1985 to 1986. Then, she became the leader for the whole country from 1989 to 1992.
She was also chosen to be a stand-in member of the Parliament of Norway. This was in the election of 1985. She served as a regular member from 1986 to 1989. This happened when other members were working in the government. She was part of a group that looked at education and church matters.
In 1994, Turid was a main person in a campaign. This campaign wanted Norway to join the European Union. But the people of Norway voted no in a special election.
A Career in Culture and Media
Turid Birkeland worked in many different areas. She was a TV and radio host for a short time in 1995 and 1996. She worked for channels like TV+ and TVNorge.
Her Time as Culture Minister
From October 1996 to October 1997, Turid was the Minister of Culture. She worked in the government led by Thorbjørn Jagland. As Minister of Culture, she visited Cuba in April 1997. This was the first time a Norwegian government minister had visited Cuba officially. They set up a plan for cultural exchange.
Working in TV and Music
After being a minister, Turid went back to working in media. She was a host on a radio show in 1998. She also worked on the TV channel NRK 2 from 1998 to 1999.
From 1999 to 2001, she was a producer and manager at Rubicon TV. Then, she became the director for cultural programs at the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK). She held this job from 2001 to 2004.
Turid was also on the board of Telenor, a big phone company. She was there from 2007 to 2012. She also helped lead the Risør Chamber Music Festival. This is a festival for classical music. From 2004 to 2010, she was its managing director.
In 2012, Turid Birkeland became the director of Concerts Norway. This organization helps bring music to people all over Norway. She took over from Åse Kleveland, who had also been Minister of Culture before her.
Her Later Years and Passing
In 2011, Turid Birkeland found out she had a serious illness called myelofibrosis. This is a condition that affects the bone marrow. She passed away on 24 December 2015, because of problems from this illness.
