History Around the Mountain

The Calland Family Home

Long ago, a family named Calland lived near Turkeycock Mountain. The head of the family was Samuel Calland (1750-1808). Their home was very large, with 22 rooms! It was located right at the bottom of the mountain.

Today, most of that big house is gone. Only a smaller building remains. It has one and a half stories and six rooms. There is also an earthen basement.

What Can Still Be Seen?

Even though most of the house is gone, some interesting parts are still there. For example, the main room had a very high ceiling. You can also see pine wainscoting, which is wood paneling on the lower part of the walls. A brick chimney and one of the old staircases are also still visible. These pieces help us imagine what the large home once looked like.
