Tuxedo is a small place in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. It is an unincorporated community. This means it is not an official town or city with its own local government. Instead, it is part of the larger county.

History of Tuxedo

Tuxedo started to grow around 1886. People began to settle near the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad line. This railroad later became known as the Pennsylvania Railroad.

How Tuxedo Began

In 1894, a local builder decided to create a new neighborhood here. He called it Tuxedo. He advertised it as "Washington's Prettiest Suburb." It even had its own train station. The goal was to attract people who worked in Washington, D.C.

Even with lots of advertising, Tuxedo grew slowly. It mainly developed along three blocks next to the train tracks. By 1917, there were about 20 houses, one church, and one school.

Growth and Development

Tuxedo continued to grow over time. By 1942, it had expanded to include two more blocks. There were about 50 homes and a new school. This shows how the community slowly became bigger.

Where is Tuxedo?

Tuxedo has clear borders. To the north, it touches the Town of Cheverly. To the south and east, it is next to the John Hanson Highway. The B&O Railroad line forms its western border.

All the information about the people living in Tuxedo is combined with the data for Cheverly. This is because Tuxedo is not a separate town.

Shared Services with Cheverly

Even though Tuxedo is not an official town, it shares many services with Cheverly. Cheverly is a nearby incorporated town.

  • Schools: The second school built in Tuxedo was called the Cheverly-Tuxedo School. It opened in 1923. This school and another in Cheverly served students until 1991. Today, the Cheverly-Tuxedo School is a special education center.
  • Fire Department: Tuxedo also shared a volunteer fire department with Cheverly. The first Tuxedo-Cheverly Fire Station was built in 1930. A new station was built in 1968 on Tuxedo Road.

At first, these fire stations were run by volunteers. Later, paid firefighters from Prince George's County helped out. By 1995, the Tuxedo-Cheverly Fire Company became the first fire station in the county to have paid firefighters working 24/7.

Unfortunately, this fire station closed in 2010. The county said it was due to budget problems. Most of the firefighters and equipment moved to a new station in Springdale, Maryland. The old Tuxedo-Cheverly Fire Station building was sold.

Tuxedo Today

The old fire station building is now used by the New Horizons Supported Services organization. This group helps people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They support these individuals in finding jobs and improving their lives.

Much of the land in Tuxedo is now used for industrial businesses. This is because it is close to major transportation routes. These include the railroad, the John Hanson Highway, and the Baltimore–Washington Parkway.

Notable People from Tuxedo

  • Cathy Lanier: The former Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia grew up in Tuxedo. She was a very important leader in law enforcement for Washington, D.C.
