Twin Lakes (Bois Blanc) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Twin Lakes is a special lake in Michigan, USA. It's found on Bois Blanc Island, which is an island inside a much bigger lake called Lake Huron. Twin Lakes is about 680-acre (2.8 km2) big, which is like having 500 football fields of water!

What makes Twin Lakes unique is that it's one of the biggest lakes in Michigan that is completely inside another island. It even has a few smaller islands within its own waters. The lake looks like two parts that are almost separate, joined by a narrow strip of land. You can find Twin Lakes in the eastern part of Bois Blanc Island, a little over one mile (1.6 km) north of Pointe aux Pins, which is where the island's dock and main settlement are.

Exploring Twin Lakes

Twin Lakes is surrounded by wet, marshy land called wetlands. About 75% of the land around the lake belongs to the State of Michigan. This land is mostly made of silt or low-lying bushes.

How Deep is Twin Lakes?

Twin Lakes is not very deep. At its deepest points, it's only about 10 to 11 feet (3.0 to 3.4 m) down. This means it's quite shallow compared to many other lakes.

Fish in the Lake

To understand what kinds of fish live in Twin Lakes, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources studied the water in 2012. They found many different types of fish, especially "panfish." Panfish are smaller fish that are often caught for eating.

The most common fish they found was the pumpkinseed sunfish. They also saw brown bullhead and walleye swimming in the lake.

Where the Water Goes

Water from Twin Lakes flows out through a stream called Sucker Creek. This creek then carries the water into the much larger Lake Huron.
