About Tyrone, New Mexico
Tyrone is located about 5 miles (8 kilometers) northeast of an older town also named Tyrone. The original town was eventually taken down because of mining work nearby.
How Tyrone Was Built
The current community of Tyrone was built by a mining company called Phelps Dodge. This company, which is now Freeport-McMoRan, created the town to provide homes for its miners.
Between 1968 and 1972, about 320 houses were built. A few more homes have been added since then. There was also a large building at the town's entrance that had a post office and a general store, but these are now closed.
Fun Places in Tyrone
The town was designed with places for people to enjoy. It included a baseball field where games could be played. There was also a children's park for younger kids. A large, grassy "picnic park" covered ten acres, perfect for outdoor gatherings.
Some of the bigger homes with great views were located on top of a ridge. These were sometimes called "Bosses Hill homes." In the 1990s, the mining company sold these homes, and now they are owned by individuals.
