Early Life and Background
Tyrone Phillips was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. He has a special heritage, being of both Fijian and Indigenous Australian descent.
Starting His Rugby Journey
Tyrone began playing rugby league at a young age. He played his junior rugby for a team called La Perouse United. After showing great promise, he was signed by the South Sydney Rabbitohs club. This was an important step in his journey to becoming a professional player.
Playing Career Highlights
Junior and Youth Teams
From 2011 to 2013, Tyrone Phillips played for the South Sydney Rabbitohs' NYC team. He was a strong scorer, getting 24 tries in 46 matches. In November 2013, he signed a two-year contract with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. He continued to play for their NYC team in early 2014. Later that year, he moved up to the Bulldogs' New South Wales Cup team. On 3 May 2014, he represented New South Wales in an under-20s game against Queensland.
Making His International Debut
In 2015, Tyrone had a big moment in his career. On 2 May, he played for the Fiji national team. This was his first international game, and it was against Papua New Guinea in the 2015 Melanesian Cup. Fiji won the game 22-10.
Playing in the NRL
Tyrone made his NRL debut in 2015. He played for the Canterbury Bulldogs in Round 11 of the 2015 NRL season against the Canberra Raiders. On 27 September, he was recognized for his great play. He was named on the wing in the 2015 New South Wales Cup Team of the Year. In November, he signed a new two-year contract with the Canterbury club.
In 2017, Tyrone signed a one-year contract with the Penrith Panthers for the 2018 season. He made his debut for the Penrith team in Round 9 of the 2018 NRL season. He played against the North Queensland Cowboys and scored two tries in the game.
Success with Newtown Jets
In 2019, Tyrone joined the Canterbury Cup NSW club Newtown. He played in their Round 15 game against his former team, the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. Tyrone scored a try in that match.
Later that year, Phillips played a key role for Newtown in their Canterbury Cup NSW grand final. They won against the Wentworthville Magpies in an exciting game that went into extra-time. Tyrone was involved in the play that led to the winning try.
Recent Club Play
In 2023, Tyrone Phillips continued his rugby league career. He played for the Glebe team in the Ron Massey Cup.
