Tyrone Keith Yates was born on January 22, 1954. He is a judge for the Hamilton County Municipal Court. He was first elected to this role on November 8, 2011.

Before becoming a judge, Mr. Yates was a member of the Democratic Party. He served in the Ohio House of Representatives, representing the 33rd District from 2003 to 2010.

Early Life and Education

Tyrone Yates grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. He finished Withrow High School in 1972. While in high school, he was chosen as "Most Likely to Succeed" and "Best School Citizen." He was also named "Boy Mayor of Cincinnati" in 1971.

He went to the University of Cincinnati and earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in history in 1978. While there, he was the student body president. He also represented students on the university's board of trustees.

Later, he studied law at the University of Toledo College of Law. He received his law degree (Juris Doctor or J.D.) in March 1981. During law school, he was part of the Moot Court team, which is like a debate team for law students. He also worked as an intern at the White House in 1979.

Public Service and Career

Tyrone Yates has had a long career in public service and law. He worked as an assistant attorney general for the state of Ohio. He was also an associate at a law firm called White, Getgey, and Meyer Co., LPA.

Serving Cincinnati City Council

Mr. Yates was a member of the Cincinnati City Council from 1990 to 1999. During this time, he was chosen twice to serve as vice-mayor of Cincinnati. In the 1997 election, both the Democratic Party and the Charter Committee of Greater Cincinnati supported him.

From 2000 to 2003, he worked as a trial counsel in the Juvenile Division of the Hamilton County Public Defender's Office. He also led Cincinnati's Citizens Committee on Youth in 2002.

Work in the Ohio House of Representatives

While in the Ohio House of Representatives, Mr. Yates served on several important committees. These included committees for Finance and Appropriations, Ways and Means, Civil and Commercial Law, and Criminal Justice. He was the chairman of the Committee on Criminal Justice. He also served on the State Criminal Sentencing Commission.

He was also chosen to lead the Correctional Institution Inspections Committee. This committee had eight members from both parts of the state legislature. Mr. Yates also helped choose a famous Ohioan to be honored in Statuary Hall in the United States Capitol.

In January 2010, Ohio Governor Ted Strickland appointed Mr. Yates to become a judge.

Current Role as Judge

In 2019, Tyrone Yates kept his seat on Hamilton County's municipal court for the second district. He won with a large majority of the votes, showing strong support from the community. He continues to serve as a judge today.

Community Involvement and Awards

Tyrone Yates is very involved in his community. He is a life member of several organizations, including:

  • The Association for the Study of African American Life and History

He also served on the board of SOTENI International, Inc., which is a group that works to prevent AIDS in Kenya. He is currently the chairman of SOTENI Kenya.

Mr. Yates has received several awards for his work and service:

  • In 2010, he received the Myrl H. Shoemaker Award from the Ohio Democratic Party.
  • In 2009, he received the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections Gold Star Award.
  • He also received the OACAA Don Striker Legislative Bulldog Award and the Oscar B. Griffith Leadership Award.
  • In 2013, he received the NAACP Theodore M. Berry Award.

Tyrone Yates is married to Karen L. Yates. They have two children, Aiden and Clarke Sanders.
