Baseball Career
Starting with the Seattle Mariners
Tyson Gillies began his professional baseball journey in 2007. He played for the Peoria Mariners, a minor league team. In his very first game on June 23, he hit a single. He also showed his speed by stealing three bases in another game on August 6. Later that year, he joined the Everett AquaSox. He had a great start with them, getting five hits in eight tries.
In 2008, Gillies played for the High Desert Mavericks. He then moved up to High-A baseball.
Playing for the Philadelphia Phillies
On December 16, 2009, Tyson Gillies was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies. This trade was a big deal because it involved famous players like Cliff Lee and Roy Halladay. Tyson said he was "overwhelming to hear my name even being involved or mentioned with [Lee and Halladay], let alone being traded for them."
He was added to the Phillies' main roster on November 18, 2011. He stayed with the team until June 6, 2014.
Other Teams and Independent Leagues
After his time with the Phillies, Tyson Gillies continued to play baseball. In 2015, he signed a contract with the San Diego Padres.
He later played for several independent league teams. These are professional teams not connected to Major League Baseball. He joined the Sugar Land Skeeters in 2016. Later that year, he played for the Kansas City T-Bones. He hit 4 home runs and had 16 runs batted in for the T-Bones.
In 2017, Gillies signed with the Ottawa Champions. He also played for the York Revolution in 2018. His last team was the Québec Capitales in 2019.
Personal Life
Overcoming Hearing Impairment
When Tyson Gillies was four years old, doctors found out he had a hearing impairment. This means he can only hear about 30 percent in one ear and 50 percent in the other. But with hearing aids and by learning to read lips, he has done very well.
Tyson believes his hearing impairment made him stronger. He said it made him "focus hard on everything I do in life." On the baseball field, he relies on what he sees and what he knows about the game. He studies plays carefully because he cannot always hear his teammates yelling. He thinks his vision became "phenomenal" because he had to use it more.
The Amazing Race Canada
In 2024, Tyson Gillies appeared on the TV show The Amazing Race Canada. He competed on the show with his teammate, Michael Crouse.
