Tyson Gillies (born October 31, 1988) is a Canadian former professional baseball outfielder. He was chosen by the Seattle Mariners in the 25th round of the 2006 Major League Baseball draft. Tyson graduated from R. E. Mountain Secondary School in Langley, British Columbia and has played for the Canada national baseball team.

Professional Baseball Career

Starting with the Seattle Mariners

Tyson began his professional baseball journey with the minor league Peoria Mariners in 2007. He got his first hit, a single, on June 23 against the Arizona League Angels. He also showed off his speed by stealing three bases in one game on August 6.

Later in 2007, he moved to the Short-Season Everett AquaSox. There, he had a great performance, getting five hits in just eight tries. He also took part in the Mariners' 2007 Arizona Fall League. In 2008, Tyson played for the Class-A Advanced High Desert Mavericks.

Moving to the Philadelphia Phillies

On December 16, 2009, Tyson was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies. This trade was a big deal, as it involved several players, including famous All-Stars Cliff Lee and Roy Halladay. He was added to the Phillies' main 40-man roster on November 18, 2011.

Playing for Other Teams

After his time with the Phillies, Tyson continued his baseball career with several other teams. On February 27, 2015, he signed a minor league contract with the San Diego Padres.

In 2016, Tyson joined the Sugar Land Skeeters in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Later that year, he signed with the Kansas City T-Bones. He played 45 games for the T-Bones, hitting 4 home runs and getting 16 RBIs.

Tyson then played for the Ottawa Champions in the Can-Am League in 2017. In 2018, he briefly joined the York Revolution. His last team was the Québec Capitales in 2019.

Life Beyond Baseball

Overcoming Challenges

When Tyson was four years old, he was diagnosed with a hearing impairment. This means he has limited hearing, with 30 percent in one ear and 50 percent in the other. However, with the help of hearing aids and by learning to read lips, Tyson has successfully managed this challenge.

He shared how his hearing difference made him stronger. He learned to focus very hard on everything he does, both in life and on the baseball field. He explained that he relies on what he sees and his knowledge of the game, especially since he cannot always hear people yelling. This has made his vision very sharp, allowing him to notice things others might miss.

On The Amazing Race

In 2024, Tyson Gillies took on a new challenge outside of baseball. He competed on the tenth season of The Amazing Race Canada. He raced alongside his teammate, Michael Crouse.
