Società Sportiva Dilettantistica Sanremese Calcio, often called Sanremese, is an Italian football club. It is based in the city of Sanremo, in the Liguria region of Italy.

The original club, U.S. Sanremese, stopped playing in 1987. The club you see today was started again in 2015. Currently, Sanremese plays in Serie D, which is one of Italy's top football leagues.

History of Sanremese Football

Early Years (1904-1987)

The club first started in 1904 as U.S. Sanremese. However, the actual football team didn't begin until 1911. It was formed when two local teams, Ausonia and Speranza, joined together.

Sanremese played three seasons in Serie B, a high-level league, from 1937 to 1940. Their best-ever result was finishing 9th in Serie B during the 1937–38 season. This was a great achievement for the club!

The team also played in every single Serie C championship from 1952 to 1958. This shows how consistent they were in that league.

Later, from 1977 to 1979, the team moved up from Serie D to Serie C1. They stayed in Serie C1 for seven years in a row. In 1980, they achieved another historic moment by finishing 4th in Serie C1.

Playing in the Anglo-Italian Cup

In the 1980–81 season, Sanremese took part in an international competition called the Anglo-Italian Cup. It was also known as the Talbot Challenge Cup that year. The team won two matches, drew one, and lost one. They finished third in their group.

Financial Problems and Restart

In the summer of 1987, the club faced big financial problems. After 83 years, the original team had to close down.

But Sanremese didn't stay gone for long! The club was started again in 1987. It began in a lower league called Terza Categoria and was named Sanremese Football Club 1904. In 1992, it joined with another local team, Sanremo 80, and got its historic name back: U.S. Sanremese Calcio 1904.

Ups and Downs (1987-2011)

The club worked its way back up through the leagues. They won the regional Eccellenza Liguria league twice, in 1991–92 and 1995–96, which helped them get promoted to Serie D. They also won the Regional Coppa Italia Liguria in 1995–96.

In the 1997–98 season, Sanremese won Serie D. They even reached the final for the amateur national title, but lost to Giugliano. The team then played in Serie C2 for two seasons before going back to Serie D.

They spent four seasons in Serie D and then were allowed to join Serie C2 again in 2004. They played three more seasons in Serie C2. In 2006, they reached the final of the Coppa Italia Serie C, but lost to Gallipoli.

By 2007, the club faced more financial difficulties. Many players left, and the team was moved down to a lower league. In 2008, the club was officially stopped by the Italian Football Federation due to its debts.

Another Restart

In the summer of 2008, the club was started again by its last president, Carlo Barillà. It played in Seconda Categoria.

Then, in 2009, another local team, Ospedaletti-Sanremo, took over the name and history of the club. They became U.S.D. Sanremese Calcio 1904. This new team won the regional Eccellenza Liguria league in 2009–10 and was promoted to Serie D. They also won the Regional Coppa Italia Liguria again.

In 2010, the team was even allowed to join Lega Pro Seconda Divisione, a professional league. They managed to avoid being moved down after a playoff match. However, in 2011, the club had serious financial problems and was closed down once more.

The New Sanremese (2012-Present)

After a year without a team, the club was started for a third time in the summer of 2012. It was named A.S.D. Sanremese and began playing in Terza Categoria. The club slowly climbed back up the leagues.

In 2015, the club made a big change. It allowed another local team, ASD Carlin's Boys, to take its place and change its name to Unione Sanremo. This new team started in Eccellenza. They had a fantastic first year, winning the Coppa Italia Dilettanti in 2016, which automatically promoted them to Serie D. In 2019, the club was renamed Sanremese Calcio.
