UP2U was a fun British TV show made just for kids. It aired on BBC1 on Saturday mornings. The show ran from 16 July 1988 to 16 September 1989. It was broadcast live from the city of Manchester in England.
The first series was made in a special studio. This studio was at BBC North West in central Manchester. The second series was broadcast from the show's own office.
What Was UP2U All About?
UP2U was a lively show packed with different things. It had exciting entertainment and cool reports from different places. There were also interviews with guests. Plus, it offered "things-to-do" guides for viewers.
The name "UP2U" meant that viewers could get involved. Just like in the show Blue Peter, kids could write in. They could suggest ideas for stories and features. Viewers could also vote by telephone during the live show. This let them choose which features, clips, or music videos to show next!
How the Show Worked
Each week, two of the presenters would be in the studio or office. They would host most of the show. The third presenter would be out on location. This presenter would send in reports. These reports were linked into the main show at different times.
An Unexpected Moment
During one of the live reports, something unexpected happened. Presenter Anthea Turner was reporting from the Royal Tournament. A special effect, called a pyrotechnic display, went off near her. This happened while she was talking to the camera during a motorcycle stunt.
The incident was shown live on TV. Later, people uploaded videos of it to sites like YouTube. The accident happened because of a mix-up. There was a misunderstanding between the show's staff and the stunt organizers. Also, Anthea's reporting spot was changed at the last minute.
