Udhampur District facts for kids
Udhampur (which means "Udhampur District" in Urdu) is a special area, like a county, in Jammu and Kashmir. The main town of this district is also called Udhampur. It's an important place for many people who live there.
In 2001, a count of the people showed that over 700,000 people lived in Udhampur. For every 1,000 boys and men, there were about 871 girls and women. More than half the people (about 54%) could read and write. This was higher for boys and men (about 66%) than for girls and women (about 39%). Most people in Udhampur follow the Hindu religion. Many of them are from a group called Dogras. There are also many Gujjars and Bakarwals, who are groups of people who often move from place to place.
The main languages spoken in Udhampur are Dogri, Urdu, and Kashmiri. Kashmiri is spoken by people who moved from Kashmir, including many Kashmiri Pandits.
