Ramnagar is located near the Mansa Devi Nallah. This is a small stream that flows into the Tawi River. The Tawi River goes through Jammu. The town is about 27 kilometers off the main road from Udampur.

A Glimpse into Ramnagar's History

Ramnagar town was once the capital of the Bandralta State. The last king of this state was Bhupendra Dev. He was from the Bandral Rajput Dynasty. In 1821, Sikh forces took over, and King Bhupendra Dev moved away.

Building the Ramnagar Palace

The beautiful palace complex in Ramnagar was built in the 19th century. It has three main parts. Rajput Raja Suchet Singh started building it. He ruled from 1822 to 1844. Raja Suchet Singh was the brother of Raja Gulab Singh. Gulab Singh was a famous Dogra warrior. Later, Ram Singh, the son of Raja Ranbir Singh, also helped build the palace.

Ramnagar is located at coordinates 32°49′N 75°19′E / 32.82°N 75.32°E / 32.82; 75.32. It is about 828 meters (2716 feet) above sea level. The area around Ramnagar is very hilly. About 90% of it is covered in forests.

Pilgrimage Sites and Nature

Ramnagar is home to important pilgrimage sites. These include Chountra Mata and Marhada Mata. People carry a special lamp called an Akhand Jyoti to these shrines. This happens during the Navratra festival, which is twice a year. This pilgrimage, or yatra, is done with great excitement. People show their devotion to Maa Durga and Maa Kali. While people traditionally walk, a road is being built to Chontra Mata.

Other interesting places to see include Gurlang, the Seoz Glaciers, and the Samna Manj range. The Shri Narsing Ji Maharaj temple is also in central Ramnagar.
