Exploring Uharte-Arakil
A Look Back in Time
What's in the Name?
The name Huarte comes from the Basque language. It means ur arte, which translates to 'between waters'. In modern Basque, the word uharte or ugarte shares this same origin.
While it often means 'island', it can also describe a place located between two rivers that meet. Many places in Navarre and the Basque Country have similar names. These places are usually found where rivers join or where a river bends.
A Strategic Location
The town of Uharte-Arakil was built in a very important spot. It is located in a narrow part of the Barranca valley. It is also supported by a bend in the Arakil river. This river bend helped protect the people living there.
Over time, the town has grown beyond its original river boundaries.
How the Name Changed
The town's name has changed a few times over the centuries. In 1268, it was called Huart. Later, it became Uart in 1350. Other names included Uart de Valo d'Araquil (1366) and Huarte de Val de Araquil (1610). In the 1700s, it was known as Ugarte Araquil (1701) and Hugarte Araquil (1708).
Historically, the town's name included Araquil. This is the name of the valley where the municipality is located. It was added because there is another town in Navarre also called Huarte. Adding Araquil helped people tell the two towns apart.
Today, Uharte Arakil is the official name of the town. This name became official on June 8, 1992.
