Ulcer facts for kids
An ulcer is like an open sore or wound that forms on the surface of your body. You can get ulcers on your skin, or on the soft, moist linings inside your body, like the mucous membranes in your stomach or mouth.
Ulcers happen when the very top layer of your skin or mucous membrane gets damaged and breaks down. This creates an open spot, which is what we call an ulcer.

What Causes Ulcers?
Ulcers can form for many different reasons. It's important to know what might cause them so they can be treated properly.
Germs and Infections
Sometimes, tiny living things called germs can cause ulcers. These germs can lead to an infection that damages the body's surface.
Pressure on the Skin
If a part of your skin has too much pressure on it for a long time, it can lead to an ulcer. This often happens to people who have to stay in bed for a long time.
Harmful Substances
Certain substances can burn or damage your skin or mucous membranes, causing an ulcer. For example, strong acid in the stomach can sometimes lead to stomach ulcers because it irritates the lining.
Other Health Issues
Ulcers can also be a sign of other health problems.
- Blood Flow Problems: If a part of your body doesn't get enough blood because of issues with blood vessels, the tissue can get damaged and form an ulcer.
- Serious Illnesses: In some cases, ulcers can be linked to more serious conditions like cancer.
- Stress: Even stress can sometimes play a role in the development of certain types of ulcers, especially in the stomach.
