Ultrasuede facts for kids
Ultrasuede is a special type of fabric created in 1970 by a scientist named Dr. Miyoshi Okamoto. He worked for a company called Toray Industries. In Japan, this fabric is known by another name, Ecsaine. It's often described as a man-made version of suede leather, which comes from animals.
Ultrasuede is very useful and can be found in many places. People use it for fashion items like clothes and shoes. It's also popular for making homes look nice, like in interior decorating. You might even find it inside cars and other vehicles as upholstery. It's also used in factories for different jobs, like protecting electronic gear. Plus, it's a favorite material for making footbags (also called hacky sacks) and juggling balls! Other companies also make similar fabrics, like Sensuede and Majilite.

What is Ultrasuede Made Of?
Ultrasuede is a mix of different materials. It's mostly made from polyester, which is a type of plastic. This polyester is woven into tiny, tiny fibers called microfibers. It also contains polyurethane, which helps hold the fabric together. Depending on the specific type of Ultrasuede, the mix can be about 80% polyester and 20% polyurethane, or sometimes 65% polyester and 35% polyurethane.
This fabric feels a lot like real suede. However, it has some cool superpowers! It's very good at resisting stains and doesn't lose its color easily. You can even wash it in a washing machine, which is super handy. Unlike some fabrics, Ultrasuede doesn't get those annoying little balls of fiber called pilling. It also resists fraying, which means the edges won't easily unravel.
Ultrasuede is also very strong and safe. The kind used in cars, like its Italian cousin Alcantara, meets special safety rules for how it burns. This means it's safe to use inside vehicles. Another neat thing is that both sides of the fabric look almost the same, so you can often use either side.
