The Ulverton River is a river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Saint-François River. The Saint-François River then joins the mighty Saint Lawrence River. The Ulverton River is located in the Estrie region of Quebec.
The river flows through several towns and areas. These include:
- Parts of Le Val-Saint-François Regional County Municipality in the Estrie region. This includes the towns of Maricourt, Racine, and Melbourne.
- Parts of Drummond Regional County Municipality in the Centre-du-Québec region. This includes the towns of Durham-Sud and Ulverton.

River's Path and Surroundings
The Ulverton River flows for about 30 kilometres (19 mi) (about 18.6 miles) towards the northeast. It is the most important river in the area around the town of Ulverton.
Where the River Starts
The Ulverton River begins in a mountain area near Maricourt. This is in the northern part of a place called the canton of Ely. The river's starting point is about 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) (about 0.9 miles) from the western border of Racine.
The very beginning of the river is found:
- East of the rivière le Renne.
- South of the Rivard stream.
- Southwest of the village of Maricourt.
- East of Route 222.
- North of Valcourt.
Journey of the Upper River
The first part of the Ulverton River's journey is about 20.8 kilometres (12.9 mi) (about 12.9 miles) long.
Here's how it flows:
- It flows east for 5.1 kilometres (3.2 mi) (about 3.2 miles). It makes big loops, first to the north, then to the south. It crosses Racine for about 1.0 kilometre (0.62 mi) (about 0.6 miles).
- Then, it flows north for 1.8 kilometres (1.1 mi) (about 1.1 miles). It crosses the line between Racine and Melbourne.
- Next, it goes north for 5.4 kilometres (3.4 mi) (about 3.4 miles). Along the way, it collects water from the Bisaillon stream.
- It continues north for 3.6 kilometres (2.2 mi) (about 2.2 miles), picking up water from the Nelson stream.
- Finally, it flows northeast, then northwest for 4.9 kilometres (3.0 mi) (about 3.0 miles). It goes through the "Melbourne Valley" and crosses Route 116.
Journey of the Lower River
After crossing Route 116, the Ulverton River flows for another 19.5 kilometres (12.1 mi) (about 12.1 miles).
This part of its journey includes:
- Flowing west for 5.1 kilometres (3.2 mi) (about 3.2 miles). It winds along the north side of Route 116 and the railroad. It then enters Durham-Sud.
- Going north for 7.6 kilometres (4.7 mi) (about 4.7 miles) until it reaches Highway 55.
- Flowing northeast for 5.1 kilometres (3.2 mi) (about 3.2 miles) to Route 143.
- Finally, it flows north for 1.7 kilometres (1.1 mi) (about 1.1 miles) until it reaches its end.
Where the River Ends
The Ulverton River empties into the Saint-François River. This happens on the west side of the Saint-François River. The meeting point is about 6.3 kilometres (3.9 mi) (about 3.9 miles) upstream from Brown Island. It is also 4.4 kilometres (2.7 mi) (about 2.7 miles) downstream from Stevens Island.
This mouth of the river is located:
- About 1.3 kilometres (0.81 mi) (about 0.8 miles) north of the center of Ulverton.
- About 5.5 kilometres (3.4 mi) (about 3.4 miles) southeast of the center of L'Avenir.
River Names Through Time
In the past, the Ulverton River was also known by another name: the “Black River.”
The official name, “Rivière Ulverton,” was recorded on December 5, 1968. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is the organization in Quebec that names places.
