Uma Shankar Mishra (born around 1923 – died July 4, 2016) was an important person in India's history. He was an activist who helped India gain its freedom. He was also a politician and a leader for the Indian National Congress party in a place called Raebareli.

His Early Life
Uma Shankar Mishra started working for India's freedom in 1946. He spent his life helping his country. He was an activist and took part in many movements and protests with other freedom fighters.
Working in Politics
With Feroze Gandhi
Uma Shankar Mishra worked closely with Feroze Gandhi from 1951 to 1960. Feroze Gandhi ran for election in Raebareli in 1951 and won. Uma Shankar Mishra helped him a lot during and after the election. They were good friends and worked well together.
With Indira Gandhi
In 1966, Uma Shankar Mishra and five other leaders met Indira Gandhi in New Delhi. They asked her to run for election in Raebareli. Indira Gandhi won the election in 1967 and became the Prime Minister of India. She ran for election in Raebareli again in 1971, 1977, and 1980.
Mishra was a senior leader. He was very important in the Congress party's campaigns in Raebareli. He successfully managed her elections and helped her win in the area.
In 1980, Indira Gandhi won in both Raebareli and Medak. She then decided to keep the Medak seat. After that, other leaders like Arun Nehru, Sheila Kaul, and Captain Satish Sharma won the Raebareli seat. Uma Shankar Mishra was key to the Congress party's success in Raebareli.
He also led a movement to help people work together in groups (cooperatives). He also helped improve local village governments (Panchayati movement) in the district. For over fifteen years, he served as the Vice President of the Zila Parishad, which is a local district council in Raebareli.
With Sonia Gandhi
In 2002, Uma Shankar Mishra was chosen as the President of the District Congress Committee. This happened when Captain Satish Sharma was in charge.
In 2004, he asked Sonia Gandhi to run for election in Raebareli. This was the same area her mother-in-law, Indira Gandhi, had represented. Sonia Gandhi ran in the 2004 election and won by a very large number of votes. Uma Shankar Mishra managed the entire election and the area perfectly.
In a special election in 2006, Sonia Gandhi's victory margin almost doubled. Her share of the votes also went up to 80 percent. In the 2009 election, Sonia Gandhi won again by a large number of votes. Uma Shankar Mishra was known as a brilliant strategist for the Indian National Congress in Raebareli.
He was serving his fourth term as the President of the District Congress Committee when he passed away.
