Umbayee (ഉമ്പായി; 1950 – 1 August 2018) was a talented Indian singer and composer. He was famous for his unique style of singing, especially in a type of music called Ghazal. Ghazal is a beautiful form of poetry and music, often sung in South Asia. Umbayee was born in Mattancherry, Kerala, and passed away on August 1, 2018, in Aluva.
Umbayee's Early Life
Umbayee was born in 1950 in Mattancherry, a place near Kochi. His real name was Ibrahim. When he was a child, his family didn't really support his love for music. In fact, his father was strongly against him pursuing music.
Because music took up so much of his time, Umbayee didn't do well in his school exams. This meant his school days ended early. His father, seeing how much music distracted Ibrahim, sent him to Bombay (which is now called Mumbai). Umbayee's uncle was a sailor there, and he arranged for Ibrahim to train as an electrician.
Going to Bombay changed Umbayee's life forever. There, he met a great music teacher named Ustad Munawar Ali Khan. Ustad accepted Ibrahim as his student. Ibrahim then studied music with Ustad for about seven years without stopping.
How Music Inspired Umbayee
Umbayee once said that "Mattancherry was a melting pot of music." This means there was music everywhere you looked and listened. He felt that you just had to be open to finding it.
Like many young people at that time, Ibrahim was greatly inspired by a singer named Mehboob. Mehboob was a natural and very captivating singer. During those years, many famous Hindustani musicians visited Mattancherry.
Ibrahim used to do small jobs at Abdul Khader Vakil's house, where these musicians often stayed. He would listen to their talks about music and their performances. Umbayee later said, "That was the beginning" of his true musical journey.
One special time, he got to hear Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Alla Rakha perform live in Mattancherry. After this experience, Ibrahim realized he could do much more than just play the Tabla (an Indian drum). He understood that "There was so much to learn. What I was doing was childish." This moment pushed him to learn and grow even more as a musician.
