The Uncanoonuc Mountains are two small mountain peaks located in Goffstown, New Hampshire, United States. The north peak is the highest point in Goffstown. It stands about 1,324 feet (404 m) above sea level. The south peak is slightly lower, rising to 1,321 feet (403 m).

What's in a Name?
The name "Uncanoonuc" might come from an old Native American language. It could be from the Massachusett language term kuncannowet. This word means "breast."
Fun Things to Do at Uncanoonuc
In the early 1900s, the Uncanoonuc Mountains became a popular resort. There was a hotel and even a special train called an incline railway. Today, these mountains are still a great place for outdoor fun. You can enjoy hiking and snowshoeing there.
The mountains also offer amazing views. You can see the city skyline of Manchester nearby. On a very clear day, you might even spot the faint skyline of Boston far away!
A Look Back: Skiing on the Mountains
The Uncanoonuc Mountains were once home to a small ski area. This was back in the 1930s and 1940s. Skiers used the incline railway to get up the south peak. There were three main trails for skiing down the mountain. It was a very popular spot for winter sports.
However, in 1941, the incline railway was damaged by a fire. This event unfortunately stopped the ski operations.
Plans for a New Ski Area
In the 1960s, there were plans to build a new ski area. This project started in 1963 on the north peak. Equipment like chairlifts and snow-making machines were ordered. Several new ski trails were also cleared.
However, the town of Goffstown stopped the project. They were worried about how it might affect the environment. Because this project didn't happen, the city of Manchester opened its own ski area. This new area, called McIntyre, opened in 1971.
Uncanoonuc Today: Broadcasting Hub
The south peak of the Uncanoonuc Mountains is now home to many broadcast stations. These facilities send out signals for TV and radio. For example, WMUR-TV uses the peak to serve the Manchester area.
