Unga Island is the biggest island in the Shumagin Islands. These islands are located off the Alaska Peninsula in southwestern Alaska, United States. The island's name in the Aleut language is Uĝnaasaqax̂.

Unga Island is quite large, covering about 170 square miles (442 square kilometers). This makes it the 36th largest island in the United States. In the year 2000, only one person lived there permanently.

The island used to be called Grekodelarovskoe. This name came from a Greek explorer named Evstratii Ivanovich Delarov. He explored the area in the late 1700s. He worked for a company called the Russian-American Company.

In 1968, Unga Island received a special honor. The National Park Service named it a National Natural Landmark. This means it has unique natural features that are important to protect.

Island Population

Unga Island was listed in the U.S. Census in 1940. At that time, it was an area without a formal town. The census recorded 79 people living there.

However, this number was not completely accurate. The island's total population was actually 231 people. The 79 people counted were those living outside the main village of Unga. The village itself had 152 residents.
