Union Chapel is a special old building in Hillsborough, New Hampshire. It was finished in 1887. Since then, it has been a very important place for the community. The chapel has a unique design called Stick/Eastlake style. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. Before that, it joined the New Hampshire State Register of Historic Places in 2006.

Discovering Union Chapel's Design

The Union Chapel is in a part of Hillsborough called Lower Village. You can find it on Sawmill Road. It is a one-story building made of wood. It has a pointed roof and its outside walls are covered with wooden boards. The building sits on a strong granite foundation.

A square tower sticks out a little from the front of the chapel. This tower has an open area at the top called a belfry. A belfry is where a bell would usually be. The belfry is covered by a sloped roof. The windows are grouped together. They have special supports underneath them. The windows on the front of the chapel have small roofs over them. All the windows have colorful glass panes. Inside, the chapel is mostly finished with shiny, varnished wood.

The Chapel's Community Story

A group called the Ladies Aid Society helped build this chapel. They wanted a place for meetings and worship in Lower Hillsborough. They built the chapel between 1886 and 1887. The total cost was about $2,081.38. Most of the money came from people in the Lower Hillsborough area.

The biggest gift came from Benjamin Pierce Cheney. He was born in Hillsborough. A local architect named John Jackman designed the chapel. It seems he based his design on a slightly larger church he built in nearby Henniker. The chapel was mainly used for religious services during warmer months. It has also been a busy center for community events since it was built.
