The Union Church of Vinalhaven is a special old church located on East Main Street in Vinalhaven, Maine. It was built a long time ago, in 1899. This church is a great example of a building style called Shingle style. A famous architect named John Calvin Stevens designed it. Because it's so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Discovering the Union Church
The Union Church is on the south side of East Main Street in downtown Vinalhaven. It's a single-story building made of wood. The outside is covered with shingles, which are like flat pieces of wood or other material. The roof has a pointed shape called a gable.
What Makes the Church Special?
The long side of the church faces the street. On the right side, there's a square tower that sticks out. This tower goes up to a belfry, which is where bells might be. The belfry has louvers, which are angled slats that let sound out but keep rain away.
The tower has a pointed roof, shaped like a pyramid. The main door to the church is at the bottom of this tower. It has a small porch with a gabled roof over it.
Unique Windows and Design
In the middle of the church's front, there's a wide wall dormer. This is a window that sticks out from the roof. It has a special "tripartite Gothic window," which means it's one large window divided into three parts.
The side of the church that faces west also has a big Gothic window. On either side of this large window, there are smaller oriel windows. These are cool windows that stick out from the wall.
History of the Church Building
The Union Church was built by Otto Nelson. He followed the design made by John Calvin Stevens. Stevens was the most well-known architect in Maine around the year 1900.
The Shingle Style
John Calvin Stevens was a big fan of the Shingle style of architecture. This church is a fantastic example of that style. It was built to replace an older church from 1860. Back then, Vinalhaven was a busy place for getting and shipping granite.
