Union councils of Pakistan facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A Union Council in Pakistan is a group of people chosen by voters to help manage local areas. It's like a small local government. Each Union Council has 21 members called councillors. The main leader is called a Nazim, which is similar to a mayor, and there's also a Naib Nazim, like a deputy mayor.

What is a Union Council?

Union Councils are the lowest level of government in Pakistan. They work closely with the people in their local areas. In the countryside, these councils are often called "Village Councils." They usually cover a large village and the smaller villages nearby. If an area is part of a city, it's usually called a "Union Council."

How Union Councils Work

Each Union Council is led by a Union Nazim. There are 13 members who are elected by the people to be councillors. These members include men and women elected directly, and also representatives for workers and people from minority groups. The Union Nazim and the Union Naib Nazim are also part of the council.

Besides the elected members, there are also government staff who help the council. For example, there's a Secretary who is a government worker appointed by the state. The area a Union Council covers is usually part of a larger area called a tehsil. A tehsil is a smaller division within a district. Sometimes, a Union Council can be part of a City District.

Different Levels of Government

Pakistan has different levels of government that work together.

  • The federal government is the highest level. It makes big decisions for the whole country and helps manage the provinces.
  • Provinces are the next level down. They manage districts and other areas within their province.
  • Union Councils are at the local level. They work directly with communities to help manage local services and needs.
