Union Mills is a small community in LaPorte County, Indiana, in the United States. It's a place where people live, but it's not officially a town or city with its own local government. It's known as an unincorporated community.

History of Union Mills

Union Mills started to grow way back in 1832. A man named Joseph Wheaton was one of the first people to settle here. He picked a spot near Mill Creek and began to set up a small village.

How Union Mills Got Its Name

A few years later, in 1836, Sylvanus Everts built a special kind of mill called a gristmill on Mill Creek. A gristmill is a place where grain, like wheat or corn, is ground into flour. Everts decided to call his new mill "Union Mills." Soon, the small village that Joseph Wheaton had started also became known by the same name.

Early Days and Growth

In 1838, Union Mills was very small, with only five log houses. But things started to change. A general store opened in 1840, which was a big deal for the community because people could buy many different things there. The biggest boost to Union Mills came when three train lines were built nearby. These train lines helped the community grow and connect with other places.
