Why Union Valley Became a City
In the early 2000s, cities to the west, especially Royse City, started growing very fast. Royse City's population grew from about 3,000 people in 2000 to 9,300 in 2007. Royse City began taking over land that was close to Union Valley.
People in Union Valley worried that their area would be taken over by Royse City or another nearby city. They were concerned about higher taxes and losing their quiet, rural way of life. So, they decided that becoming an official city was the best way to protect their community.

About 83% of the voters said yes. There were 90 votes in total, with 75 people voting for it and 15 against. Union Valley officially became a city.
