History of Royse City
How Royse City Got Its Name
Royse City is named after a man named Garrett Burgess Griffin Royse. People often called him Byrd Royse. He was born in Adair County, Kentucky, in 1838. Around 1850, his future grandmother-in-law, Mrs. Nancy McCasland, bought land that would later become Royse City.
The Railroad and Town Founding
Byrd Royse played a big part in bringing the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway line through Rockwall County. This railroad connected Greenville to Dallas. Royse City was officially settled in 1885 when the railway arrived. Byrd Royse planned the town and sold the first pieces of land.
Growth and Development
For many years, Royse City stayed a small, quiet town. This was partly because it was close to bigger cities like Garland (21 miles away) and Dallas (33 miles away).
In the mid-1960s, Interstate 30 was built just south of the city. This highway helped the city grow southwards.
Around 2000, Royse City started to feel the effects of fast growth in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Its location along Interstate 30, between Rockwall and Greenville, helped this growth.
Since then, Royse City has grown quickly, with many new neighborhoods being built. By 2010, the population had jumped to 9,349 people. This was a huge increase of over 200%!
